Finding Domains

How do you find problems to work on?

There’s probably more content on this than anything else for startups. But this blog is about how I do things, and I’m eternally trying to favor action over reading.

Reading endless content isn’t how you do something, action is.

If you tell people you’re quitting your job soon, the first thing they’ll ask you - “What are you going to build?”

In some ways “I haven’t the slightest clue” is a great answer. Most startups pivot endlessly, it isn’t so much declaring a path and marching as it is having a vague direction and meandering.

But how do I know what direction to go? I have to guess based on a combination of my strengths, hunches on trends, and my core values.

What I’m great at:

  • Building amazing user experiences - I notice when a workflow is painful.
  • Engineering
  • First Principles thinking

Trends I believe in

  • AGI is close
  • Cost to build software will plumment
  • Superintelligence is farther away
  • Cost to orbit is plummeting

What I value:

  • Improving human lives
  • Autonomy
  • Beautiful tools
  • Technology that gets out of the way

How I mix these concepts, I don’t know. But I know this is what’s important. The missing ingredient is taking these with me as I explore.
